I think this information might be useful, even though technically it does
not belong to this group.
Please excuse I have switched to English, but I am not familiar with the
Czech telecommunication lingo.
 
Yes, it is an individual account using so called SLIP (or TIA, or PPP)
connection. It is a dial-up connection using regular phone line. This is why
the speed is limited to 28.8kbs. There is no charge for a local phone call
of unlimited length. The connection cost is included in telecommunication's
company service charge ($20 a month). Another CONNECTION option is to have
an individual account with a local Internet provider using a leased line
56.6kbs or 128kbs. This requires a special line (still copper though)
installed by the telecommunication company. The going rate for this
connection is $50 to $100 a month.
 
Different PROVIDER option is go with the big guys such as Compuserve,
America On Line or Prodigy. Typical charge is $15 a month and 10 free hours.
Not all of them provide a full Internet access and a user is limited to
their software (e.g. very slow WWW browser on Prodigy). The communication
speed may vary according to a geographical area.
 
The base of Internet users in the U.S. is shifting from traditional
university and government users to corporate and individual accounts. There
is a lot of publicity on Internet in media and it is regarded by many people
as a future Information Superhighway.
