If you have an ATAPI CDROM (or tape) and would like to help us check it out before release I would like to hear from you. If you know of someone who would be interested in helping with a beta test of this driver please pass this note along. Some notes: - You must be running (or willing to run) 2.0 or higher. Depending on the circumstances I might ask you to apply some additional kernel patches. - Since the ATAPI driver required modifications to the 'wd' driver there is a chance that data on a wd drive will be at risk. - If there are problems you must be willing to work with me (for a reasonable period of time) to try to resolve them. This might include running gdb and dumping variables from a running system or from a crash dump. It may also include receiving and installing debugging patches to the kernel to help isolate a problem. I'll provide technical support related to this beta (even if you don't have a support contract) as long as your willing to work with me to resolve problems that come up. - Source or binary customers are welcome. - This driver modifies the kernel only, installing it basically requires running a script that comes with the beta kit to unpack the sources or binaries, modifying your kernel configuration file to add the 'wdpi' device driver, building a kernel and rebooting. - I'm interested in testing installs from ATAPI CDROM, with the root device being on the same cable or not (even with a SCSI root). Please let me know if you want to try an install. - I'm also interested in anyone who has an older ST-506 style disk controller (MFM, RLL, ESDI). Given that the wd driver had to be modified I would like to check it out on some of the older controllers. So, what is ATAPI? ATAPI is an SFF (Small Form Factor Committee) standard that basically allows the SCSI protocol to run across an IDE interface. ATAPI CDROM's (and tapes eventually) are more or less SCSI devices with an IDE electrical interface. The ATAPI driver for BSD/OS looks like a drive to the 'wdc' (IDE controller) driver and looks like a SCSI host bus adapter (like 'aha' or 'sa') to the SCSI layers. The CDROM thus appears as an 'sd' device to the user (administrator). This is all intended to provide a standard CDROM (and tape) interface and reduce the proliferation of proprietary CDROM interfaces. As a bonus, almost everyone has an IDE interface or can get one for a very low cost. Many motherboards have IDE interfaces built in. An ATAPI drive can be used in much the same physical configurations as an IDE hard drive, with the exception that it can't be booted from directly (this is a BIOS restriction). Typical configurations might be: IDE master IDE slave 2nd IDE master Root ---------- ---------- -------------- -------- IDE (wd0) ATAPI (wdpi0) - wd0a ATAPI - - sd0a IDE (wd0) IDE (wd1) ATAPI (wdpi0) wd0a Other configurations are possible, you should be able to run 2 ATAPI CDROM drives on the same cable for instance. Thanks for reading this far, if you are still interested I would like to hear from you. Depending on the response volume I may have to select fewer testers than responded to keep things sane (for me). -Eric Varsanyi Berkeley Software Design Inc. ewv@bsdi.com
