                                   ABC'96
Fourth International Distributed Summer School on
                       Advanced Broadband Communications.

                              9 - 12 July 1996

                MADRID - BRUSSELS - AVEIRO - NAPLES - BERLIN
 ==============================================================================

ABC'96 is the fourth "International Distributed Summer School on Advanced
Broadband Communications". ABC'96 is a school on advanced communications,
delivered using advanced communications services. It is organised by Project
NICE(AC110) in the ACTS Programme, run by Directorate General XIII/B of the
Commission of the European Community.

ABC'96 follows in the footsteps of the three previous successful International
Distributed Summer Schools organised by Project BRAIN (R 2095) in the RACE
Programme from 1993 to 1995. Previous Summer Schools were distributed to
various sites in Europe in a progressively increasing number over the three
years.

ABC'96 will now cover 5 main sites - Aveiro, Berlin, Brussels, Madrid and
Naples - and will reach various subsidiary sites - Austria, Czech Republic,
France, Greece, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland. Canada
will also be connected to the Summer School.

ABC'96 IS A DISTRIBUTED SUMMER SCHOOL

The 1996 Summer School will be an international distributed event. Lecture
rooms of the different physical main sites will be joined into a single
virtual lecture room by a multimedia CSCW (Computer Supported Co-operative
Work) tele-education application. Lecturers and participants will interact
and work together with full interaction without the sense of geographical
separation - in a powerful demonstration of the advantages of tele-presence
made possible through the use of broadband technology.

The Summer School network will include Terrestrial Trans-European ATM links
provided by the ACTS project JAMES, as well as ATM over Satellite links and
gateways to narrowband networks such as the Internet. This requires a complex
collaboration between several institutions, National Hosts, public network
operators and R&D projects.

THE THEME OF ABC'96

Presently, Telecommunication Companies are enrolling Software Engineers with
an Information Technology background, who have to become acquainted with the
Telecommunication Culture.

Similarly, Information Technology Companies who are attempting to move into
the Telecommunication Market are enrolling Telecommunication Engineers who
then need to learn about the Information Technology Culture.

ABC'96 is designed to facilitate both cultural transitions and the theme
chosen for the 1996 Summer School is : "The convergence of the Engineering
Culture between Telecommunications and Information Technology" This theme will
be handled in the form of tutorials, lectures, panel discussions, interviews,
debates and demonstrations.

OBJECTIVES OF ABC'96

ABC'96 will raise the awareness of the business opportunities which advanced
broadband communications can offer to the users, PNOs and equipment suppliers.
ABC'96 will allow participants to gain knowledge needed to assist in the
migration of organisations towards the implementation and use of broadband
communication networks and technology.

ABC'96 aims at helping user organisations appreciate and understand the issues
relevant to the development of applications for broadband communications.
ABC'96 is also targeted at training public operators and suppliers for their
new role, in the increasingly competitive business world, in meeting the
communications needs of users within large corporations as well as in small
and medium enterprises (SMEs). In the short term it is the business needs of
these organisations which will be the main force, driving the introduction of
Advanced Broadband Communications.

ISSUES ADDRESSED IN ABC'96

Within the theme of Convergence of Engineering cultures, the following issues
will be handled :

*Information Technology for Telecommunications Engineers
        Networking and distributed computing techniques
        Multimedia application systems
Structuring application program interfaces using object-oriented
        techniques

*Service and Telecommunications Engineering for Information Technology
 Engineers
        Telecommunications management and intelligent networks
        Mobile telecommunications and access networks
        Service engineering techniques

*Telecommunications and Information System Integration
        Construction techniques for complex systems
        Engineering the Information Superhighway
        Integrating engineering and organisational complexity

WHERE DOES ABC'96 TAKE PLACE ?
