ABOUT THIS HUNT
===============
The turnout was not very strong for this Hunt. We only had a dozen
participants. K-12 students are generally not as well connected as
are those in a college environment. A majority of the participants
were from private schools.

The date of the first Thanksgiving Proclamation was June 20, 1676. We
found this out by using Veronica. First, telnet to ux1.cso.uiuc.edu,
and at the login prompt, type 'gopher'. (Any other gopher site may be
used also.) Then, choose option 11, "Other Gopher and Information
Servers". Choose option 17 in the next menu, "Search titles in
Gopherspace using Veronica". Then use option 1, (Search Gopherspace
at NYSERNet) Then, enter in 'thanksgiving proclamation' for the key
words, and a menu of items should appear. Choose "First Thanksgiving
Proclamation (1676)" (number one). A file is displayed, with the date
at the top.

2. (3) Who is the director of Academy One?
[Question from Gleason Sackman]
The directory of Academy One is Linda Delzeit
<aa621 at clevenet.freenet.edu>. We arrived at this
information by using the gopher server located at our
site (lehigh.edu) and through it we did a veronica
query on gopherspace. Our search phrase was: "academy
AND one." One of the documents was labeled "Academy
One: News." There was a message from the directory

Daniel Pinkwater?
[Question from Beth Kevles]
[Rick: This is a fuzzy question, as it can be variously interpreted
by then number of titles, or the number of physical books. Also,
what about joint authorship? Since the question is fuzzy, and the
point is network skills, I accepted most anything that could be found
or derived by connecting to NYPL.]

5. (5) Geography is made more interesting by connections to real life
events. The Whitbread Yacht Race is currently underway, in which
competitors vie to be the first yacht round the world on a specified
route. Where can oneobtain a set of charts detailing the exact
latitude and longitude of each competing boat on a given day?
[Question from Wm Beasley]
To get a copy of the latest Whitbread Yacht Race's report, anonymous
ftp to ftp.cica.indiana.edu, in the directory /pub/laser/Incoming look
for files with "whit" and three digits after it.
I knew there was a newgroup called 'rec.boats', so I checked to see if
I can get any information:
gopher gopher.micro.umn.edu
--> 8. Other Gopher and Information Servers/
--> 2. Search titles in Gopherspace using veronica/
--> 4. Search Gopher Directory Titles at NYSERNet <?>
Index word(s) to search for:rec.boats
--> 6. rec.boats/
--> 78. Whitbread RTW Race Results.
"I'll post this up to Will Sadler's machine (ftp.cica.indiana.edu)
shortly."
In one of the articles about Whitbread, the poster said he also
uploads it to ftp.cica.indiana.edu, so I:
anonymous ftp to ftp.cica.indiana.edu
cd /pub/laser/Incoming
and found files regarding the Whitbread race, and boats' location.

it should be, that's fine with me. Bravo to Harry Liu for finding out
where Tegucigalpa is first.]
The latest high in Tegucigalpa as of Nov 08, 1993 is 73 F.
First I used CIA World Factbook to find where Tegucigalpa is.

Extra Credit (1) Could you find a description of a course titled
"Physics and Chemistry of the Solid Earth" taught at Massachusetts
Institute of Technology this fall?
In order to find the answer to this question, we once again used
Veronica and searched for Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This
gave us a menu of items, and we chose number 4. This telnetted us to
techinfo.mit.edu. We went through four menus, choosing Courses,
Schedules (Fall), & Calendars, then choosing Course Descriptions (Fall
93), and then Course 12 - Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences.
This gave us a file, which we searched for Physics and Chemistry by
typing "find physics and chemistry".
Here's the description:
