I have no idea how you could get statistics to test your assertions. You
might want to try posting your question on one of the MUD or IRC newsgroups
via Usenet. Note, however, that pure measures of IRC and MUD usage are not
the only item to consider in this issue. Many people use either or both IRC
and MUD as venue in which to discuss legitimate scholarly activities. Also,
they are a superb way for people who are not native English speakers to learn
this language. Even though MUDS and IRCs are often used in a frivalous
manner, they do provide a way for many students to exercise their thinking
skills and communications skills that isn't provided anywhere else.
