NEBRASKA LINKS PRIMARY/SECONDARY SCHOOLS TO INTERNET..................

Nebraska's primary and secondary schools will soon be using the
Internet to enhance learning. A consortium of 19 Educational Service
Units (ESUs), each serving various Nebraska school districts, recently
installed 15 DEC OSF/1-based DEC 3000 Model 400 Alpha AXP systems as a
first step in building a statewide education network that links
teachers and students to the Internet. The ESUs were funded through
legislation requiring Nebraska's school districts to gain Internet
access. The consortium initially considered Sun and Tatung systems,
but decided to go with Digital based on the price-performance leader-
ship of Alpha, the openness of DEC OSF/1, Digital's commitment to
UNIX and to education, and Digital's on-site support and training
    capabilities.

    TO SUBSCRIBE TO DECNEWS:

To subscribe to DECNEWS, send a message to LISTSERV at UBVM.BITNET or
LISTSERV at UBVM.CC.BUFFALO.EDU. The message should be this command: SUB
DECNEWS Firstname Lastname (e.g. SUB DECNEWS John Jones). The command
is the text of your message; the subject is ignored by LISTSERV.

    TO COPY SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS:

Readers may obtain additional information about DECNEWS items by
requesting full texts of supporting documents, which are marked with an
asterisk at the end of each item.

Supporting documents referenced in DECNEWS can be copied electronically
by anonymous file transfer protocol (FTP) on the Digital public access
gateway (see instructions below), or by sending a GET filename command
(e.g. GET news0110 txt) to LISTSERV at UBVM.BITNET or
    LISTSERV at UBVM.CC.BUFFALO.EDU.

Following are the instructions for using FTP to copy DECNEWS files. If
you've never used an FTP application, please consult with your support
organization. Depending on the software you have on your system, the
    commands may vary slightly:

    1. Use the INTERNET application, FTP, to connect to gatekeeper.dec.com.
(16.1.0.2 is the address if you don't have it defined)

    2. Login as user: anonymous

    3. Enter a password. You may use any string as the password, but we
prefer that you use your e-mail address.

    4. Change to the DECNEWS directory; for example:
       cd pub/DEC/DECinfo/DECnews-EDU

    5. Use the get command to get the file; for example: get news0201.txt

Note that the username in step 2, the directory in step 4, and the
filename in step 5 are case sensitive; they must be typed as shown.
Also, ".txt" must be used instead of " txt" (space txt).

    TO ACCESS PREVIOUS ISSUES:

All DECNEWS issues and supporting documents are automatically archived.
You can obtain a list of available archive files by sending an "INDEX
DECNEWS" command to LISTSERV at UBVM.CC.BUFFALO.EDU. or
    LISTSERV at UBVM.BITNET.

These files can then be retrieved by means of a "GET DECNEWS filetype"
command, or using the database search facilities of LISTSERV. For more
information on the latter, send an "INFO DATABASE" command to LISTSERV.

TO PROVIDE YOUR OPINIONS ON DECNEWS:

A DECNEWS Reader Survey, survey.txt, is posted for your convenience.

TO ACCESS OTHER DIGITAL PRODUCT INFORMATION:
