Vazeni pratele,
my asi problemy emigrace do CESNEtu nebo CONetu netrpime. Nasledujici
poznamka M. Strangelove ale ukazuje, ze "bohaty" americky Internet
ma problemy, ktere je mozna oznacit jako problemy s "cizinci" , napr.
emigranty nebo navstevniky z CompuServe. Zdravi
                                                   Vladimir Vrabec

Subject: Immigrants in Cyberspace

I am writing an article for my regular column in ONLINE ACCESS about the
wave of "immigrants" that are arriving on the shores of the Internet from
Compuserve and other commercial networks. I would like to hear from
Internet members what their experience of Compuserve users has been, and
what they think about the growing numbers of Compuserve users who are
staking their claim on the frontiers of the Net.

Please reply to mstrange at fonorola.net. Replying constitutes an agreement
to be quoted, unless otherwise indicated in your reply.

The following is from the draft of the article, to appear in ONLINE ACCESS
later this Fall.

-----
Cyberspace Immigrants:
A Plea for Tolerance on the Virtual Frontier

The Internet is facing a test, a test which,
unfortunately, it may just barely pass. This
virtual community is experiencing its first wave
of immigrants from distant shores in cyberspace
as small town Compuserve begins to offer Internet
excursion tours to its members. Now through
electronic mail to various Internet online
conferences, and soon through a Usenet
newsfeed, Compuserve members are joining in on
Internet forums and, for better or worse, making
their presence known to this much larger
community.

What is now a small trickle of postings is
certain to grow into a raging river once the
Compuserve Usenet newsfeed is in place. The
result is that a simply enormous number of
CompuServe members will be taking a crash course
in Internet commands, structure, content, history
and, most important of all, culture. Thus far, I
fear, some CompuServe members are acting like
stereotypical American tourists: loud, obnoxious,
and ignorant (or worse, disrespectful) of local
customs. Please keep in mind that i said *some*
and by no means *all.*

But like a marriage counselor, I must be honest
and admit that both parties are part of the
problem and will have to share responsibility for
solving the conflict and building a happy, if not
blissful, marriage. So it is that Internet
members are equally guilty. Guilty, in this case,
of exhibiting the darker traits of a tightly knit
and proud community: xenophobia and intolerance ...
