Subject: Announcing the SJCPL WWW Server - the 1st US Public Library WWW Server

Dear Web4Lib People,

We would like to announce the St. Joseph County Public Library's WWW Server
located in South Bend, Indiana, which came onto the Internet for the first
time on Monday, March 14, 1994.  We officially let the rest of WWW World
know of our existence on Mosaic's "What's New" page on May 1, 1994.  We
believe (?) that we are the very first Public Library in the US to put up a
WWW Server on the Internet.  Anyway, we have not been able to find any
other public librariesy that have done so to date.  If we are wrong, please
inform us and we will retract our claim.

At the present time our Homepage provides links to two in-house databases
related to the South Bend area, including: detailed information on over
1,200 local governmental service agencies, social servic agencies, clubs,
etc; and a 5-year index to the metro section of the South Bend Tribune, the
local newspaper.  We have more databases planned, including detailed
information on all Indiana State Senators and Representatives; US Census
data on St. Jospeh County and the South Bend metropolitan area; etc.  There
is also information about our public library and its branches and we hope
to provide links to our on-line computer catalog with the holdings of our
public library and two other public libraries in this area (Mishawaka-Penn
Public Library and the Plymouth Public Library, both of which are on our
system).  We also hope to provide from our homepages hypertext links to all
the other public libraries world-wide that operate WWW Mosaic Servers. You
can help by letting us know where you are!
