Subject: NEW-LIST: Municipal Telecommunications

I received about 40 very positive responses to my query as to whether we
needed a list like this or not, so here it is!

PLEASE REPOST TO *APPROPRIATE* LISTS

Municipal Telecommunications List: muni-telecom at civicnet.org

This list focuses on the design, use, and policy of municipal
telecommunications networks, including regional networks supporting
multiple municipalities (e.g. regional library networks).

Currently, this list is open to all subscribers, but our intent is that
this be a forum for municipal officials and staff, such as MIS directors,
telecom directors, cable commissioners, GIS system managers, library
automation managers, dispatch system operators, etc.; and secondarily a
forum for those who provide equipment and services to the municipal
telecom environment.

The intent is to focus on nitty gritty design issues surrounding the
construction of municipal networks, including:

- city/town-wide data networking
- use of cable television I-net infrastructure to support town needs
- consolidation of school/library/municipal networks
- regional network approaches for rural areas
- purchasing and negotiation strategies

This list is not intended for the discussion of community networks other
than as they are supported by and interact with municipal networks - i.e.
this is not COMMUNET.

This list is not intended for the discussion of regulatory issues, other
than as they impact municipal acquisition of networking facilities and
services - i.e. this is not telecomreg.

Administrative traffic should be sent to majordomo at civicnet.org
