Subject: Re: [PC-NEWBIE] repair after a virus
I generally agree with comments re: repair after a virus... However,
it is not always necessary to reformat and I don't believe that
anyone mentioned that a boot sector virus can be removed using FDISK
without trashing your computer. The command to replace the master
boot record on your computer with a fresh one is:
FDISK /mbr
MBR - stands for master boot record. Note that you would need to
boot your computer from a *clean* boot disk and then run an
uninfected fdisk program on your C:> drive.
HERE IS SOME VIRUS INFORMATION THAT SOME MIGHT APPRECIATE:
Patricia Hoffman's VSUM is the leading Virus Information Summary List
available... Ms. Hoffman rates virus scanners and also provides a
database of viruses - names, cross references, how to get rid of them
and what they do (also see the F-Prot site below). I HIGHLY recommend
that everyone have this database...

Here is the site with the latest scanner certification results:

Project VGrep is a virus name cross-reference system. Here is where
you can get Vgrep:

Have YOU been the recipient of a Virus chain letter and would like to
know if it really is a Hoax? Here are a couple of the BEST places to
check on virus hoaxes and other virus info:

HERE ARE SOME GREAT PLACES TO LEARN MORE ABOUT VIRUSES:
Data Fellows virus information center... The database here
includes MACRO viruses too. Don't be fooled about macro viruses... If
they are executed they can do some serious damage to your system.
EXCELLENT resource!

good place to check:

WHICH SCANNERS DO I USE? Several... One of the most important things
to consider for any scanner is the support available for the product
and virus updates. Here are the ones I like the BEST (trial versions
and/or completely operational shareware programs are available for
all scanners listed):
F-Prot (The Dos version is FREE):

F-Prot FREE Dos scanner ( a *must* have):
