Subject: Alertbox: Conservatism of Web Users

The Alertbox for March 22 is now online at
http://www.useit.com/alertbox/980322.html

Web users are getting ever more conservative in their demands for
compliance with established design conventions. No individual site is
allowed to stand out any more; all are part of a single interwoven user
experience so the Web as a whole dictates design. Also, the speed with
which users upgrade their Web client software (browsers and such) has
dropped to half its previous level. As a result, page designs must now be
minimalist and conform to conventions; innovation must move to the
server-side with a goal of providing value-added services rather than
flashy apperance.

Other News:

Two great new books about Web design have been added to my list of
recommended books:
the O'Reilly book on Information Architecture for the Web and a hardcopy
elaboration of the
famous and humorous webpagesthatsuck site.
