The Czech Geological Survey (Cesky geologicky ustav) is a state financed institute. It was established in 1919 as the successor to the Austrian-Hungarian Geological Institute (Vienna). Since its establishment, the Czech Geological Survey (former names: St
ate Geological Survey of Czechoslovakia, Central Geological Survey) has
executed the duties of the State Geological Survey. In the present time, the Czech Geological Survey belongs to the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic (together with Geofond of the Czech Republic). By decree of the Ministry, the CGU became the executive body of the State Geological Survey in 1990.
CGU is a member of FOREGS - Forum of European Geological Surveys and
ICOGS - International Consortium of Geological Surveys. Its activities correspond to the status of a State Geological Survey.
CGU creates regional geological and thematic maps in different scales from the territory of the Czech Republic (chtel bych nalinkovat na nejake povidani o CR, je-li nekde k disposici) and researches its complex geological, geochemical and hydrogeological
investigation. Investigations into the protection of the environment hase became an important part of the activities during in years.
- 1845 First geological map of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia 1:875 000
- 1964 Czechoslovakia geologically mapped and printed at 1:200 000
- 1994 75% of the Czech Republic's territory mapped to the scale 1:50 000
The Headquarters of the CGU is located in
Prague, Klarov 3, Praha 1, nearby the Malostranska Metro Station in a historical building, founded in 1832 by the Klar family for blind people.
Management and the following departments are located under the same roof:
- Sedimentary formations
- Geological and thematic maps
- Ecological Services
- Hydrogeology
- Economical services
- Database and GIS
- Publishing department
- Library and documentation
You can find a geological book shop on the first floor of the building.
The Barrandov branch is located in the eastern
part of the city, Geologicka 6, Praha 5. The offices are accessible from
the
Smichovske nadrazi Metro Station
by bus no. 126 and 128 at bus station Geologicka. The Labs and
Geochemistry department are located in this modern building. The aim of
the management of CGU is to concentrate all Prague's branches at this area. In the present time, on the spot are locat
ed:
- Laboratories
- Mineral Resources
- Geochemistry
The Laboratories passed the process of accreditation in 1994. An
important part of the labs is dedicated to inorganic chemistry.. Labs are organized according to analytical methods:
- Sample preparation
- Cutting and polishing
- Chemical analysis - solid, water
- Mineralogical physical and optical methods
- X-ray Diffraction
- Thermal analysis
- Micropaleontology
- Stable isotopes
- Electron microprobe analysing
- Radiogenic isotopes
- Radon risk measurements
Facilities: AAS, ICP-AES, XRF, XRD, SEM+EDX+WDX (CamScan), MS Finningan
MAT 251 and 261, GC and HPLC are used for bulk chemical, phase and local microanalysis as well as for the determination of stable radiogenic isotopes.
The Kosire branch is located near the Praha Stadium
area (the largest stadium of the world), Podbelohorska 47, Praha 5. It is
accessible from the Dejvicka Metro Station by bus no. 217 or from the
Andel Metro Station by bus no 217, 132, or 191, to bus station Podbelohorska
The Kosire branch is composed of the Department of Crystalline Formations and part of the Sedimentary Formation Department - Carboniferous.
The Brno branch is located in the largest city in the Moravian part of the Czech Republic on Laitnerova street 22, Brno. The place is accessible from the main Brno railway station by tram no 1, 2 or 10 to Hybesova
tram station.
Geological regional investigation and organic geochemistry are important parts of the Brno branch's activities.
Carbon and halogen components are studied by GC, LC, IR-spectrophotometry and Rock-Eval pyrolysis.
- Geological and thematic mapping 1:50 000 (geology, hydrogeology, mineral deposits, environmental geofactors, geochemistry, soils, engineering, geophysics, conflicts of interest)
- Geological model of the western part of the Bohemian Massif related to the ultra deep borehole - KTB in Germany
- Complex regional geological investigation of the Czech Republic
- Transition of map-construction and presentation to the digital form, creation of GIS
- Complex regional and ecological investigation of the North Bohemia Brown Coal Basin
- Geochemical and ecological mapping of the Prague urban agglomeration, mass balance in small catchements, anthropogenic sulphur in forest ecosystems, isotopic research related to paleoclimatology and groundwater pollution
- Radon risk
- Geological conditions of the underground repository of high level nuclear wastes
- Geological factors of waste disposal
- Monitoring of critical loads of sulphur and nitrogen oxides
- Contamination of groundwater, streams and sediments
- Water-soil-rock-vegetation interaction
- Impact of mineral fertilisers on geological environment
Bilateral co-operation with European Geological Surveys. CGU leads
various IGCP programs and participates in various projects of international organizations, including the UN and AEU.
Joint AEU projects: NIPHYS - Biogeochemistry of Nitrogen in forest ecosystems. APOS - Effect of different levels of atmospheric pollution on the acidification of forest soils and the stability of forests. Joint projects with US Geological Survey such as
the Evolution of Hercynian and Post-Hercynian deep crust fluids. Organizer of the International Geological Congress in Prague in 1968 and various international symposia such as BIOGEOMON, SGA and JAGOD.
