MOROCCO - INVITATION FOR A TRIP
FÉS - a town with the most beautiful medina (ancient city quarter), a really splendid
town, full of narrow lanes in which you can easily get lost, a town of mosques, little
shops and workshops of simple craftsmen in whose hands literally miraculous objects come
into existence. But you will really appreciate this feast for the eyes only at the moment
when you realize that the life which surrounds you is real. That this is no theatre or
open-air museum. A local rarity is the manual treatment and dyeing of leather.
Undisturbed, you may observe the little figures who are soaking different kinds of leather
in basins, which are tiled and filled with solutions of various colours and joined
together to form a sort of large honeycomb.
TODRA CANYON On the southern margin of the Atlas Mountains there are two beautiful
canyons, each with a green river and an oasis at its bottom - Dadés and Todra. The Todra
Canyon at its mouth looks like a narrow valley. In its most beautiful part two
perpendicular faces of rocks, 300 m high, come as close 0.5 km to each other, thus
creating a corridor several dozen meters wide. The entire bottom of the canyon is covered
with a carpet of washed-ashore pebbles, through which a clear stream winds its way. If you
want to look into the canyon from above, you must undertake a climb through a parched
valley which is full of stones, rocks, dust, scorpions, spiders and sun. However, you will
be rewarded by a superb view of the green belt of the oasis lying at the bottom of the
zigzagging valley in the distance.

TUNISIA - INVITATION FOR A TRIP
CARTHAGE - Carthage was destroyed in the year 146 BC. The Romans, however, at the
beginning of this era levelled out its ruins and reinforced them with heavy pillars. Then
they established a forum on the enlarged plateau. The important archaeological excavations
implemented on the site of the former Carthage are documented by the National Museum of
Carthage.
OPHET - The now quiet residential quarter is a locality where remains of a Punic place of
sacrifice (tophet) were discovered during excavations. There were several strata
containing urns of approximately 50 000 little children. Firstborn sons were sacrificed to
the God of Carthage, Baal Hammon, and beginning from the 5th century to the Goddess Tanit.
PUNIC QUARTER Under the remains of the Roman city a Punic structure has been unearthed
which documents how ingeniously water was distributed to the houses, some of which were up
to six storeys high.
BATH OF EMPEROR ANTONINUS PIUS This luxurious bath was built in the years 146-162 in a
gorgeous location by the sea. It was the second largest bath in the entire Roman Empire -
after the bath in Rome. This is where the cream of the Carthaginian society met to have a
bath, to rest and to do business. However, all that has survived of the bath itself are a
few huge marble columns.
BEY'S SUMMER PALACE This palace, standing next to the bath, is now the residence of the
Tunisian President. It is strictly forbidden to take photographs there!

ISRAEL - INVITATION FOR A TRIP
JERUSALEM - the capital of Israel, one of the most beautiful cities of the world and for
the adherents of three great world religions - Jews, Christians, Muslims - the Holy City.
In the middle of Jerusalem lies the Old City, surrounded by walls dating from the 17th
century. This is where the cult structures are to be found which attract hundreds of
thousands believers every year, making Jerusalem a world place of pilgrimage.
WAILING WALL - the most sacred place of all Jewry. This sacred place belongs among the
oldest and most worshipped monuments of Jerusalem. This is the only remains of a temple
dating from the 10th century BC, founded by the author of the Song of Songs, King Solomon.
This section of the wall (originally 500 m, now owing to regional redevelopment only 170
m) was given its name because the Jews once came to this place to lament the destruction
of their temple by the Roman Emperor Titus Vespasianus Augustus in 70 AD. It is
interesting to have a close look at the Wailing Wall. In the joints of its limestone
blocks you can see a lot of little pieces of paper on which wishes, thanks and entreaties
are written which are meant for God himself. In the open space in front of the Wall
prayers are said every day from early morning till late at night. Men and women pray
separately, men's heads must be covered just as women's shoulders and legs. If you want to
see for yourselves how important the Wailing Wall is for religious Jews, come here on
Friday night. After the sunset men in ceremonial dress come to this place to greet the
coming Sabbath with their singing. As this is one of the tender spots of Jerusalem, do not
get frightened if you are frisked by the Israel guards before going there.
DOME OF THE ROCK - one of the landmarks of Jerusalem which belongs among the three most
sacred Islamic shrines. The Dome of the Rock is an octagonal mosque which was erected in
687-91 (it was completely restored in 1956-64 - all the works were financed by the
Jordanian King Hussain). It stands on Mt. Moriah from which the winged mare Boraq carried
Prophet Mohammed to the seventh heaven where Allah dwells. The external walls of the
mosque are 36 meters high, lined with marble and with turquoise- and blue-coloured tiles
from Turkey; the gold in the ornaments of the cupolas is Jordanian and the imperceptibly
joined carpets are from Saudi Arabia. A calligraphic inscription with the text of the
first Sura of the Koran - the Octagon - extends around the entire upper part of the
structure. The most beautiful portal is the southern one, while the western portal is the
only one through which the mosque is entered. Apart from the Dome of the Rock, there are
also the al-Aqsa mosque and the Islamic Museum on the Temple Mount.

EGYPT - INVITATION FOR A TRIP
The Great Pyramids at Giza belong among the seven wonders of the world. The pyramids at
Giza are one of the most frequently visited places in the world and the greatest tourist
attraction of Egypt. The role of pyramids was always unequivocal. The Egyptians built
these huge structures as gigantic mausoleums for their kings, the pharaohs, wishing to
transfer their subterranean burial chambers as high on the surface of the earth as
possible so that the apexes of these monuments should touch heaven itself and the
pharaoh's soul should have a place where to repose. And in the end the Egyptians built not
only pyramids, but entire complexes of structures, sepulchral temples, burial chambers,
satellite pyramids, valley temples. The burial complex of pyramids at Giza belonged to the
pharaohs Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. Access to the pyramids at Giza is from Midan Giza
along Pyramids Road, 11 km to the south-west. Only Khufu Pyramid and Khafre Pyramid are
open to the public.
The largest Egyptian pyramid, the earliest of those which are to be found at Giza, is the
Great or Khufu Pyramid. It was completed in the year 2690 BC; its basic dimensions are:
height 146.5 m (today 137.2 m), base 230.4 x 230.4 m. It is estimated that it consists of
approximately 2.5 mill. limestone blocks weighing 6 mill. tons. The construction of the
pyramid itself took approximately 20 years. The building works were done by 100 thous.
skilful craftsmen and workers, according to very precise plans, in order to prevent the
self- collapse of the entire pyramid. The visit to the interior of the pyramid, especially
to the Great Gallery, which is 47 m long and 8.5 m high, is very impressive.
THE GREAT SPHINX. This sphinx is in the immediate vicinity of Khafre Pyramid. It is the
largest sculpture in the world. From its front paw to its tail it measures 57.3 m; it is
20 m high, its face is more than 4 m wide. It is carved out of a single piece of stone.
Every evening a programme on the history of Egypt, accompanied with music and light
effects, is staged in the open space under the Great Sphinx.
BAB EL-MANSOUR - An enormous gate which is a characteristic
feature of the city. Since 1955 it has been used as an art gallery.
HOUMT SOUK - "Market Quarter"- Every Monday and Thursday a weekly market takes
place in this capital of the Djerba Island. Even though most of the goods sold on this
market are souvenirs for tourists, Djerba is renowned also for its weaver's products and
its exquisite goldsmith's work.
