3RD PRAGUE INTERNATIONAL MARATHON
On Sunday, May 25, 1997, around 30,000 people participated in the 3rd annual
Prague Marathon on three courses. 17,000 enthusiasts of all age categories set out on the
9 km non-competitive course which was sponsored by EuroTel Praha and SPT Telecom. Athletes
bearing the EuroTel name on their starting number ran from Wenceslas Square, through the
historic city center, along the bank of the Moldau, to end at the finish line on Old Town
Square. Many of them had their mobile phone with them since a contest was underway for 3
EuroTel mobile phones at the finish line.
Runners registered for the 9 km began calling the given telephone number when instructed
to do so from the stage on Old Town Square. Calls continued to come in long after the
first three to call stood on the champion steps and accepted their mobile phones from Mr.
Jamie Macdonald, EuroTel Sales and Marketing Division Manager, and Miss Czech Republic
1997 runner-up Kristina Fridvaldská who ran in the 9 km non-competitive race in
"EuroTel colors." All the runners enjoyed extraordinarily nice weather, which
meant that thousands of athletes took in the beautiful day in downtown.
ROAD SHOW AND EUROFASHION
From March 24 to April 4, 1997, EuroTel hosted a Road Show aimed at introducing new
products in the assortment of telephones, services, and new spring prices. Also introduced
was the REGION service program which EuroTel expanded to Bohemia (except for Central
Bohemia and Prague) starting May 1, 1997, after its successful introduction in northern
and southern Moravia. Company presentations and surveys for promotional items took place
in nine cities in Bohemia and Moravia and potential customers could try out new telephones
and services free of charge. From April 22 to May 16, we prepared a series of
presentations on new products in EuroTel´s assortment for our business partners in 14
cities, including evening of contemporary style entitled EuroFashion 97.
MOBILE PHONES IN EUROPE
For interest's sake, we are bringing you an overview of ways mobile phones are
used in Europe. The graphs for eastern and western Europe clearly show the penetration or
percent of the population that owns a mobile phone in the given countries. As you can see,
mobile phones are the most widespread in Scandinavian countries, where in Finland, Sweden
and Norway, around 30% of the population owns a mobile phone. This is due primarily to the
fact that the given countries are among the pioneers in mobile communications and are
where the first cellular systems began to be operated in the 70´s. Today in the Czech
Republic, more than 2% of the population owns a mobile phone and their numbers are
growing.
EUROTEL AT AUCTION
EuroTel Praha and Sony Czech held an art auction on Thursday, April 17, in the
New Town City Hall. The works of art were auctioned off on behalf of the Arch Chantall
Foundation. The works represented the following prominent Czech artists, just to name a
few: A. Born, S. Holý, M. Kaufman, S. Kavanová, O. Kulhánek, A. Lamr, R. Roubíeek, F.
Štorek, J. Viková, or R. Wagner. The total amount contributed by both companies for Mrs.
Chantall Poulain-Polívková´s charity purposes came to 156,800 CZK.
