WORD OF INTRODUCTION

Dear Readers,

Iva Tatounova
It happened all of a sudden. As we were preparing to celebrate the first anniversary of the GSM operation in our country, devastating floods hit Moravia. At the time when the Prague's Old Town Square was flooded by the tunes of Prague symphonic orchestras and EuroTel was celebrating the first anniversary of the new operation, our management was communicating with the Crises Center of the Ministry of Defense. It was the fate's irony that the anniversary fell on 8th July, the day when the Czech Republic was hit by the biggest natural disaster of the 20th Century. A mobile phone often became the only way to communicate in the flooded areas. When EuroTel's Executive Director, Mac Allman, was welcoming the visitors to the gala public concert, he could only announce than hundreds of telephones, provided free by our company, were headed towards Moravia. Together with the phones, our technicians were also on the way to ensure problem-free operation of our network. Immediately after the end of the concert, a public collection took place, the proceeds of which were sent to the Red Cross flood relieve account. This, however, was not the end of our help. As a strong and successful organization, we were aware of our moral duties concerning the renewal of the affected areas.

The EuroTel GSM Global service commenced its operation in the Czech Republic on 1st July 1996. This launch kicked off a tremendous boom in the mobile phone business. By the end of last year, the number of mobile phone owners grew four-fold. While the number of users of the EuroTel Classic network at the beginning of 1996 was less than 46 thousand, the number of GSM users reached, one month after the sales launch, 12 thousand. As of the 31st of December the numbers climbed to 105 thousand users. The dynamics with which the mobile telephone market has been developing is one of the biggest in the world. Already in March 1997 we welcomed our two-hundred-thousandth client. In the middle of this year our NMT and GSM systems had more than 270 thousand clients.

As a mobile communications market leader, we are trying very hard to give our customers the best value for their money. Our obvious advantage is running two parallel systems of different technological and functional characteristics and user benefits. And the last but not the least advantage is the quality of the service to our clients.

EuroTel's business philosophy is putting the emphasis on a satisfied client. Mobile phones which we offer through a network of brand-name shops, centers and authorized dealers, bear the names of renowned manufacturers. This offer is supported by our service and consulting services with regular updates and expansions of these services.

Wishing you a nice autumn
