BUSINESS MESSAGING GATEWAY
Transferring information and data via
the GSM network
The Business Messaging Gateway service
Business Messaging Gateway (BMG) is a brand
new service that extends the possible uses of short text messages (SMS) to the transfer of
information and various forms of data. Although its name may sound complicated to you,
this service is basically a very simple one. Thanks to BMG, your computer will have direct
access to the SMS Center, that is, to the facility that guides the communication of short
text messages in the GSM network. |

How does BMG work?
BMG enables bilateral transfers of SMS
messages between any GSM mobile telephone or module and the service customer's computer.
Two-way communication can take place in a domestic as well as foreign GSM network. The BMG
access point from the GSM network is the ordinary telephone number to which the SMS
messages are being sent. Conversely, the customer's computer is connected to the GSM
network (SMS Center) by means of a modem (telephone) or firm link.
A short text message (SMS) is sent through the GSM network to BMG (or
sent from BMG to the GSM network) just like an ordinary SMS message, that is, it may
consist of any 160 characters, either letters or numbers. |
Comparing transfers between a mobile
telephone and BMG with transfers between two mobile telephones:
The primary advantage of a mobile phone-BMG transfer is
the sample capacity it offers for receiving and sending a large number of SMS messages in
a short period of time (approx. 2 SMS/sec., as opposed to a mobile phone-mobile phone
transfer with a capacity of approx. 1 SMS/2 sec.), the certainty that an SMS will be
received when sent through the GSM network and the ability to regulate the sending of SMS
according to the customer's needs, e.g. based on SMS delivery (a mobile phone-mobile phone
transfer does not allow this option). The financial benefits to be gained according to the
number of SMS sent are certainly interesting as well. |
Examples of use – Courier service
and BMG
In a pilot project that began in June 1998, the Czech
branch office of the international courier company DHL International, which delivers
express parcels in the Czech Republic and all over the world, has been working with
EuroTel Prague's BMG service. Throughout the day, individual courier vehicles communicate
by means of short text messages with the central computer, which contains information on
the current status of all shipments. The vehicles thus have a continuous, fast and
reliable form of contact with the center, which can effectively manage and control the
delivery process. |

Recommendation: In the event that GSM terminals or their SIM cards have been activated for
the SMS/DATA service program and are currently owned by a BMG service customer, SMS
messages sent from the GSM network to BMG using these services may, at the customer's
request, be included in the total number of SMS messages sent from the customer's
application to BMG. SMS messages sent from the GSM network to BMG will then not be billed
as part of the fees for SIM cards, but rather as part of the Business Messaging Gateway
service charges. (This only applies if the GSM terminal sends SMS from the EuroTel GSM
Global mobile telephone network.)
