Kinds of means of transport
- Underground
- The three lines ensure a fast connection between the city centre
and important peripheral housing estates. The first trains leave the
terminals at 5:00 a.m., the last ones depart at 12:00 p.m.
- Trams
- A dense network of tram lines completes the transport particularly
in wide centre, they are however slowlier. The daily traffic is roughly
from 4:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. The night lines have a frequency of
40 minutes; Lazarská is the central change point where the trams wait
for each other.
- Buses
- They run namely in the outskirts, take up the underground and bind
remote stations of different underground lines.
- Funicular
- Runs from Mala Strana to the hill of Petrin.
- Taxi
- The Prague taxi drivers have no good reputation. The price for
one kilometer inside of the city is limited to 12 Kc but although
you can be charged an astronomical sum for a short ride. If you are
not familiar with the city, you can hardly secure that the driver
uses the shortest way. However, watch whether he does not change the
rate on the taxametre, and always ask for a bill, indicating from
where where you went. Some TaxiServices to contact.
- Tourist trams and buses, steamboats
- Special offer for tourists with special timetables and fares.
- Railways
- The most important Prague stations where international trains
depart are Praha - Hlavni nadrazi (underground C Hlavni nadrazi) and
Praha Holesovice (underground C Nadrazi Holesovice). They are 3 tube
stations one from the other, 20 to 30 minutes are enough for the move.
There are other stations important for the domestic trains: Praha
Masarykovo nadrazi (underground B Namesti Republiky or 15 minutes walk
from Hlavni nadrazi) for trains to Chomutov, Usti nad Labem, Kolin;
Praha Smichov (underground B Smichovske nadrazi) for the directions
Pribram, Protivin, Beroun, Plzen; Praha Branik (trams from the
underground B Karlovo namesti) for the directions Davle, Dobris;
Praha Vysocany (underground B Ceskomoravska) for trains to Turnov and
Lysa nad Labem.
- Coaches
- Country buses are usually more expensive than trains but the bus
network is still denser than the railways. The bus lines from Prague
cover on the one hand small villages in middle Bohemia, on the other
hand mountain holiday resorts and big cities all over the country.
The most important coach station is Florenc (underground C Florenc),
where most long-distance connections run. Other coaches depart from
Holesovice (close to the railway station) to the north, from Palmovka
(underground B Palmovka) to the north-east, from Zelivskeho
(underground A Zelivskeho) to the south-east, from Roztyly
(underground C Roztyly) to the south, from the coach station Na
Knizeci (underground B Smichovske nadrazi) to the south and
south-west. You can find your own route by ABUS.
- International coaches
- On the international lines the coaches are much cheaper than the
trains (even several times). They mostly depart from the coach station
Florenc and its surroundings, eurolines uses the Zelivskeho station.
- Airport
- The airport Praha Ruzyne is situated on the north-western city
outskirt, about half an hour by the bus 119 from the underground A Dejvicka.

Caution: The map does not reflect temporary changes in Prague
transport.
At the moment
- (until November 16, 1995) the tram tracks
Malostranska - Ujezd and Malostranska - Staromestska are out of service.
- (until June, 1996) the undeground station Hradcanska is closed, you can use
near station Dejvicka.
Tickets
Ordinary tickets can be bought at tobacconists', at the entrances to the
underground and from selling machines at some tram and bus stops. They
are valid for one tram or bus ride without change, or sixty minutes in
the underground regardless of the number of changes. When getting on,
the ticket is to be marked: with the new automatic marking machines
(namely in the underground) you only put the ticket in, with the old
mechanical ones (most trams and buses) you have to put the ticket in
(from up to down) and attract it to yourself.
The tourist tickets are sold for one to five following days, the first
day of validity is to be marked on the ticket.
The long-time passes are sold at some underground stations and at the
central public transport office in the street Na bojisti, Praha 2
(underground C I.P.Pavlova). To buy such a pass, you need a photo.
The pass is not to be marked in the transportation means; it is valid
for an unlimited number of rides in the given period (plus 1 day before
and 3 days after) in the underground, trams, buses, funicular and on the
railway between all Prague stations and some stops close to the city.
However, you cannot use the EC and IC trains.
