In honor of the 23rd anniversary of Project Gutenberg, we are sending
out our first multi-media files, as below. Comments welcome.
Project Gutenberg has released 7 of the 8 March, 1994 postings and is
holding #8 for EFF's Big Dummy's Guide to the Internet, if anyone can
get us the latest edition. We just received copyright clearance, but
can't get the file from their ftp site [ftp.eff.org].
This month's selections contain:
Illustrations for Alice in Wonderland
Beethoven's Fifth in MIDI Format
A Motion Picture of the Lunar Landing
[comments on the viability of these formats are welcome]
This is the Short Edition of the Mar, 1994 Project Gutenberg Announcement
[See below for information about receiving the whole Newsletter]
Mar 1994 Big Dummy's Guide To The Internet, by EFF [bigd10xx.xxx] 118C
Mar 1994 Beethoven't Fifth Symphony [opus 67 in c-minor [lvb5s10x.zip] 117C
Mar 1994 Motion Pictures of the Apollo 11 Lunar Landing [landxxxx.zip] 116
Mar 1994 United States Census Figures Back To 1630 [uscen10b.xxx] 115
Mar 1994 Tenniel Illustrations for Alice in Wonderland/GIF [algif10x.zip] 114
Mar 1994 The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett [gardn10x.xxx] 113
Mar 1994 Violists, by Richard McGowan [viols10x.xxx] 112C
#C indicates a copyrighted work that may not be posted on fee-based systems.
You will need a MIDI card and program to play the Beethoven Symphony.
The MIDI files are BINARY files. Please let us know if you have problems.
Please note: neither this list nor its contents are final till
midnight of the last day of the the month of this announcement.
The official release date of all Project Gutenberg Etexts is at
Midnight, Central Time, of the last day of the stated month. A
preliminary version may often be posted for suggestion, comment
and editing by those who wish to do so. To be sure you have an
up to date first edition [xxxxx10x.xxx] please check file sizes
in the first week of the next month. Since our ftp program has
a bug in it that scrambles the date [tried to fix and failed] a
look at the file size will have to do, but we will try to see a
new copy has at least one byte more or less.
The easiest way to get these files is to follow these instructions:
[exactly. . .Mac users, you will do better to TYPE these commands &
NOT to point and click. . .my experience is that these commands are
often CASE sensitive and that the Mac FTP emulators have windows to
enter your commands directly. . .if you have trouble with a point &
shoot operation, try entering the commands as written here]
There is a bug in Fetch 2.1 that CAPITALIZES THE FIRST WORD,
of any command you send in some copies. Since mrcnext is an
UNIX operation, this will cause problems.
ftp mrcnext.cso.uiuc.edu
login: anonymous
password: yourname at your.machine
cd etext
cd etext94 [or 93, 92, 91 or 90. 70's and 80's are in /etext90]
get filename (be sure to set bin, if you get the .zip files)
get more files
quit
If you don't have ftp access you can get etexts via email:
To retrieve a file via e-mail, first send the following line by
itself to almanac at oes.orst.edu
send gutenberg catalog
This will instruct you how to send further requests, and will list
the available files. For example, to retrieve _Alice's Adventures
in Wonderland_, send to almanac at oes.orst.edu
send gutenberg alice
