CzechWeb 96 Information Guide

"The Internet is more revolutionary than the telephone and
television but behind the printing press and motor car... No communications
medium or consumer electronics technology has ever grown as quickly; not
the fax machine, not even the PC. At this rate, within two years the
citizens of cyberspace will outnumber all but the largest nations"
The Economist, July 1995

What are the World Wide Web and Internet?
It is difficult to imagine a technological advance which has
greater importance for managers around the world, and which is so little
understood. Most managers have only a vague notion that the Internet is a
worldwide network of computers. Even fewer managers know that the World
Wide Web is the newest and fastest-growing multimedia tool where businesses
market themselves on the Internet using text, pictures, sound and video.
To most managers, cyberspace sounds more like science fiction, and
they are surprised to learn that there are already over 75,000 Internet
users in Prague alone. There are over 35 million World Wide Web and
Internet users around the world and last year the Czech Republic had the
highest increase of people connecting to the Internet of any central or
eastern European country.
What are all of these people doing? Well, in the Czech Republic
you can already use the Internet to get stock market information, see what
the best train and bus schedules are , checkout restaurant and hotel
listings, get the latest exchange rate information, read the latest Central
European headlines, access the Czech Statistical Office for information and
much more.
The importance of understanding these developments in greater
detail becomes clear when you look at how effectively it can speed up your
performance as a manager and the performance of your organization. Without
picking up a pen or telephone, you can book a hotel room, transfer cash
from one account to another, and find the nearest outlets for a particular
product. Anyone who knows how to use the Internet can accomplish all these
tasks in less than 25 minutes.

"On the World Wide Web, a little company can look as big as the biggest
company in the world if they just put a lot of energy into their Web
site...The World Wide Web is the ultimate direct-to-customer distribution
channel."
Steve Jobs (Founder of Apple Computer), Newsweek interview, September 1995

Who is CzechWeb For?
CzechWeb 96 is a one day conference for 400 progressive managers
from leading Czech and multinational companies, governmental ministries and
universities in the Czech Republic. This conference is for all levels of
mangers, from entry-level to general managers who want an introduction to
the Internet. CzechWeb will take place in March and will cover 3 central
topics:
*What are the World Wide Web and Internet?
*How to improve organizational communication with the Internet
*How to market your organization on the Interne.

Some organizations mistakenly assume that the Internet is mainly
for their Managerial Information Systems (MIS) and technical managers, but
this is too limiting. The more that all managers know about the basics of
the Internet, the more they can improve organizational performance and
market their organizations.

"Go ahead and call 1995 the Year of the Internet, but be prepared
to call 1996, 1997, and 1998 Years of the Internet, too. With each passing
month, we're seeing more and more signs that the Internet is coming of age
as an essential business tool... Today, the World Wide Web is one of the
world's most important publishing media-and quite possibly the largest, at
least in terms of audience. Consequently, tens of thousands of business
people are eager, even desperate, to "create a presence" on the World Wide
Web."
PC Magazine, October 1995

CzechWeb's Agenda
CzechWeb, a one day conference, will begin with speeches covering
the latest Internet developments in the Czech Republic and around the world
and outlining the potential for the future. Afterwards, every participant
will go through the following program:
Workshop 1: What are the World Wide Web and Internet?
Workshop 2: Strategies for Improving Organizational Communication using
the World Wide Web and Internet
Workshop 3: Strategies for Marketing Your Organization on the World Wide
Web and Internet
Workshop 4: Interactive Session on the World Wide Web and Internet

"For many companies, the Internet is hard to resist. It is
inherently global, a corner florist can become an international flower
power simply by getting an Internet connection (and some good marketing).
Overheads are minimal. In some businesses, distance may not even affect
delivery costs because the firm may pass the order to a regional warehouse,
or ship the goods electronically."
The Economist, July 1995

CzechWeb Exhibitors
In addition to hearing the latest about the Internet and completing
the workshops, participants will also have the opportunity to talk to
representatives of the most sophisticated Czech and multinational companies
that provide hardware and software for the Internet in the Czech Republic.
Many of these companies will have interactive demonstrations on
hand so that participants can experiment with a variety of possibilities
for their organizations.

How to Register for CzechWeb 96
If you want to take part in the first major World Wide Web

Please remember, CzechWeb is for those managers who know little or nothing
about the Internet, but want to learn how to use it and how to develop
effective strategies for marketing their companies on the World Wide Web.

through pre-registration, it is recommended that participants register as
