Subject: Your mail has been received

I had occasion to e-mail something to the White House; this
came back within fifteen minutes. Thought you'd be
interested in the last couple of paragraphs. (Or did I miss
the announcement in CRTNET?)
                                  best wishes, cal

                 -----------Original message-----

Thank you for writing to the President via electronic
mail. The President is committed to integrating this new
medium into the White House. One of our primary project
goals, Phase Three, is to begin responding electronically to
your messages, which we hope to achieve soon.

Although the volume of mail prevents the President from
attending personally to every message he receives through
electronic mail, your concerns, praise, ideas, and
suggestions are carefully read by our staff, recorded and
reported to the President each week. President Clinton does
see a representative group of messages.

We are pleased to report that Phase Two of our project
is now complete and we are announcing the Internet address
for obtaining White House documents and publications. The
address is:

               publications at whitehouse.gov

To receive instructions on how to obtain documents, please
send a request to this new address. In the message body,
type "send info" (without quotes); no other text is
necessary. The instructions will be sent to you
automatically.

With this new address, you will be able to search for
and receive a list of documents by simply e-mailing your
request, as outlined in the instructions. Once you have
received your list and made your selection, our publications
server will mail the information to you within a matter of
minutes, generally. We would like to hear your reactions to
this new offering. Send comments/suggestions to:

          publications-comments at whitehouse.gov.

We all are excited about the progress that has been
made with this historic project and we look forward to
future developments. Your continued interest and
participation is very important to us. Thank you.

                         Sincerely,

                         Stephen K. Horn
                         Director
                         Presidential E-Mail

NOTE: You will receive only one autoresponse per day.

## Regarding your request:
   send info

Welcome:
--------
Welcome to the White House automatic mail response system.
To send requests to the response system, simply enclose them in the
body of a message addressed to publications at whitehouse.gov.

In order to be correctly processed, requests must be in the
message BODY, not in the Subject: line

Commands:
---------
The following commands are recognized:
help - Will send you this file.

topic STRING - Will send you a list of files and file numbers
with the specified string in their title.

send file NUMBER	- Will send you the specified file. The file number
is returned as part of a "topic" request.

send index - Will send you the complete file index from the
server. This file is approximately 400kb in size.

Example of retrieving a document:
---------------------------------
%-> mail publications at whitehouse.gov
Subject:

topic nafta
EOT
%->

Once the message has been sent with a topic request, a reply will
arrive with matching files listed, such as:

>## Regarding your request:
> topic nafta
>
>To request copies of matched files, note the file number and
>request the file by number using the "sendfile" command. E.g.:
>sendfile 12031
>
>Matching Filenames:
>-------------------
>File-# Name

>168966 pub/political-science/nafta/full-text/chap-03.txt (94543 bytes)

Supposing you want a copy of the "surge.txt" file, you would
send a request to the publications server as follows:

%-> mail publications at whitehouse.gov
Subject:

send file 168963
EOT
%->

Anonymous FTP:
--------------

The publications area is available for anonymous FTP over the
internet. To access a file, FTP to whitehouse.gov, and log in as user
"anonymous". The FTP area is set up such that files are stored under
the same name as used by the mail responder. I.e.: The file in the
example above can be found in the FTP area as file:
	pub/political-science/nafta/full-text/surge.txt

Comments:
---------

Comments relating to this service can be mailed to
publications-comments at whitehouse.gov
